Jennifer Newton, PT, DPT
Wife, Mother, Physical Therapist, GGS Certified Pre- and Postnatal Coach in Greenwood, SC
My name is Jennifer Newton. I have many titles, including wife, mother, and physical therapist to name a few. My husband is Zane Newton, and we have two beautiful children named Finn and Ava. I graduated from College of Charleston with BS in Exercise Science, followed by the Medical University of South Carolina with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2018. I am a licensed, practicing PT in the state of SC.
While I have always had a passion for exercise and rehabilitation, my passion for the Perinatal population began after my own first perinatal experience. Prior to going into labor, I was an active individual without health complications. After a series of medical complications during my first-born's labor, I emerged with several new health issues, including cardiomyopathy, moderate to severe heart failure, and an emergency C-section. I was not provided with any resources or recommendations for recovery, aside from general statements of "exercise," "avoid excess salt intake," and the occasional cardiac follow up appointments solely to assess my heart function.
I had take the lead regarding my care without medical support or direction, but with the support of my family and my own clinical judgement. Thus began my pursuit of evidence-based knowledge for postpartum recovery with a focus on the safety considerations of post-surgical C-section and cardiac complications.
One year after my son's birth, my heart function was back to normal, and I was competing in my first powerlifting competition! I have been able to go on and have more children, and am back to regularly resistance training and running again.
I want to be that resource for people with complicated pasts, who have been tossed back into life with a new medical diagnosis, a new baby to care for, an entire pregnancy and labor to recover from, and told "go exercise" with no guidelines or direction. I feel uniquely equipped to guide others due to my background and education as a Physical Therapist, my certification through Girls Gone Strong as a Certified Pre-and Postnatal Coach, my personal experience with weight training myself and others, and my own perinatal exeriences.
